Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fiber optic pigtail?
A pigtail is a short fiber cable with a connector on one end and bare fiber on the other. The bare end is fusion spliced to a fiber cable, so the cable can be connected to equipment through the connector.
What is the difference between a pigtail and a patch cord?
A patch cord has connectors on both ends and is plugged directly between devices. A pigtail has a connector on one end only and is spliced into the cable.
What is the difference between single mode and multimode pigtails?
Single mode (yellow, OS2) is used for long distances. Multimode (OM1 to OM4) is used for shorter distances inside buildings and data centers. The pigtail must match the cable type you are splicing to.
What is the difference between UPC and APC?
UPC (blue) has a flat polish, APC (green) has an angled 8° polish with lower back reflection. Always connect APC to APC and UPC to UPC.
How do I choose the right connector?
Check the adapters on your ODF or equipment. SC is common on ODFs and media converters, LC on SFP modules. Contact us if you need help choosing.
