Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fiber patch panel?
A fiber patch panel (also called ODF, Optical Distribution Frame) is a box that holds fiber adapters and manages fiber cables. The incoming fiber cable is spliced to pigtails inside the panel, and devices are connected to the front adapters using patch cords.
What is the difference between loaded and unloaded patch panels?
A loaded panel comes with adapters, pigtails and splice sleeves already included, so it is ready for splicing. An unloaded panel is empty (no adapters or pigtails), so you add your own. Unloaded is cheaper and gives you more flexibility.
How many ports do I need?
Count the fiber cores you need to terminate and add some spare ports for future expansion. For example, a 24 core cable needs a 24 port panel. With duplex LC adapters, one adapter has two ports, so a 24 port LC panel can hold 48 fibers.
Which connector should I choose?
SC is common on ODFs, media converters and FTTH. LC is used on SFP modules and high-density panels. FC and ST are used in telecom and older equipment. Choose the connector that matches your patch cords and devices.
Single mode or multimode panel?
The panel and pigtails must match your fiber cable. Single mode (OS2, yellow) is for long distances and most CCTV and telecom links. Multimode (OM3, aqua) is for short distances inside buildings and data centers.
Do I need pigtails and a splicing machine?
Yes. To connect a fiber cable to the panel, you splice the cable cores to pigtails with a fusion splicer. Loaded panels include the pigtails, and for unloaded panels you buy them separately from our store.
